Editorial Guidelines
Like we said in our About Us page, we are the world's largest web-based, sex-positions-based, wiki-based database of sex positions on the planet. Point is, this site is about sex positions. So please create articles about sex positions. Finally, before we send you off on your article creating rampage, some quick Do's and Don't's:
Do
- Be factual
- Add useful and interesting info
- Feel free to be funny
- Upload lots of pictures
Don't
- Slander
- Use foul language (including cursing and nasty or sexually explicit language)
- Write a puff piece (we're talking to you, Mr/Ms Publicist)
- Try to advertise or spam about some other website
- Create pages for sex positions under 18...that's just wrong
- Upload copyrighted content
Abide by these guidelines, and Sex Positions Wiki will be a happy place full of interesting articles and useful information about all the hottest sex positions on this planet. If you see violating content, feel free to report it! Or read on to the Editing Instructions for how to get started.
1. How do I edit a page?
Editing most Sex Positions Wiki pages is easy. Simply click on the "edit" tab at the top of a Sex Positions Wiki page. This will bring you to a new page with boxes containing the editable text of the original page.
When you are finished with an edit, you should write a short edit summary in the small field called "Revision Information" just above the Save and Previews buttons. You may use shorthand to describe your changes, as described in the legend, and when you see the difference between the page with your edits and the previous version of the page by pressing the "Preview changes" button. If you're satisfied with what you see, be bold and press the "Save" button. Your changes will immediately be visible to all Sex Positions Wiki users.
2. How do I use talk pages?
Talk pages are used to discuss how to improve articles. The standard talk pages are used to discuss an article, a template, a category, etc. Every page has an associated talk page, You can still discuss the page - you will just be the first person to edit the respective talk page.
Article talk pages are provided for discussion of the content of articles and the views of reliable published sources. They should not be used by editors as platforms for their personal views.
To access a talk page look for a link at the top of the page labeled "talk".
3. How do I revert a page to an earlier version?
By revert we mean to undo all changes made to an article page after a specific time in the past. When you do this, the page becomes identical in content to the page saved at that time. If you want to get technical, a revert is defined as any change to an article that partially or completely goes back to any older version of an article.
There’s also something called a partial revert. This accomplished either by an ordinary edit of the current version, or by editing an old version. The former is convenient, for example, for a partial reversion of a recent addition, while the latter is convenient for a partial reversion of a deletion.
Do’s and Don’t of Reverting
Do’s
- Reverting is a decision which should be taken seriously.
- Reverting is used primarily for fighting vandalism, or anything very similar to the effects of vandalism.
- If you are not sure whether a revert is appropriate, discuss it first rather than immediately reverting or deleting it.
- If you feel the edit is unsatisfactory, improve it rather than simply reverting or deleting it.
Don’ts
- Do not simply revert changes that are made as part of a dispute. Be respectful to other editors, their contributions and their points of view.
- Do not revert good faith edits. In other words, try to consider the editor "on the other end." If what one is attempting is a positive contribution to Sex Positions Wiki, a revert of those contributions is inappropriate unless, and only unless, you as an editor possess firm, substantive, and objective proof to the contrary. Mere disagreement is not such proof.
- Generally there are misconceptions that problematic sections of an article or recent changes are the reasons for reverting or deletion. If they contain valid information, these texts should simply be edited and improved accordingly. Reverting is not a decision which should be taken lightly.
- There's sometimes trouble determining whether some claim is true or useful, particularly when there are few people "on board" who are knowledgeable about the topic. In such a case, it's a good idea to raise objections on a talk page; if one has some reason to believe that the author of what appears to be biased material will not be induced to change it, editors have sometimes taken the step of transferring the text in question to the talk page itself, thus not deleting it entirely. This action should be taken more or less as a last resort, never as a way of punishing people who have written something biased. Do not revert changes simply because someone makes an edit you consider problematic, biased, or inaccurate. Improve the edit, rather than reverting it.
How to Revert
Manual method
- Go to the page, click on "Revisions" at the top, and click on the time and date of the earlier version to which you wish to revert.
- Then when that page comes up, you'll see something like "(Revision of XXX from Mon, 08/15/2002 - 22:19)" below the title.
- Or you may select the latest and one of the previous versions of the page, then click the "Show diff" button to see the difference between the two pages' versions.
- Verify that you've selected the correct version, and click to edit the page, as you would normally. Important: in the case of vandalism, take the time to make sure that you are reverting to the last version without the vandalism; there may be multiple consecutive vandal edits.
- In a vandalism case where sections of text were simply deleted and then subsequent edits were made by others, it may be easier for you to cut and paste those missing sections of text back in than to revert and then re-do the edits.
- Check the contribution history of the user who vandalized the article.
Revert wars considered harmful
Reasons
Revert wars are usually considered harmful for the following reasons:
- They diss the work of the contributor. Being reverted can feel a bit like a nasty wedgie : "I worked hard on those edits, and someone just rolled it all back"
- They cause ill-will between users and negatively destabilize articles
- They make the page history less useful, waste space in the database
- They make it hard for other people to contribute, and flood recent changes and watchlists
Editors are discouraged to revert because there is disagreement, or the edit is bad or problematic. Users are encouraged to explore alternate methods like raising the objections on a talk page, or following the processes in dispute resolution.
Three revert rule
In consideration of the harm of reverting, you may not revert any article more than three times in the same day. This is a very strict limit, not a given right; you should not revert any one article more than three times daily.
Explain reverts
When a revert is necessary, it is very important to let people know why you reverted. This helps the reverted person because they can remake their edit, but fixing whatever problem it is that you've identified.
Explaining reverts also helps other people. For example, it lets people know whether they need to even view the reverted version (in the case of, eg, "rv page blanking"). Because of the lack of non-verbal communication online, if you don't explain things clearly people will probably assume all kinds of nasty things, and that's one of the possible causes for edit wars.
If your reasons for reverting are too complex to explain in the edit summary, drop a note on the Talk page. A nice thing to do is to drop the note on the Talk page first, and then revert, rather than the other way round. Sometimes the other person will agree with you and revert for you before you have a chance. Conversely, if someone reverts your change without apparent explanation, you may wish to wait a few minutes to see if they explain their actions on the article's talk page.
4. How do I delete pages?
Request content removal by sending us a message through the "Contact Us" tab at the top menu of the homepage.
5. How do I import articles?
Is there an article you have written and would like to import into Sex Positions Wiki? The most obvious thing to do is to copy and paste content. Note, however, that most formatting will not be preserved. Also note that single linebreaks are ignored by Sex Positions Wiki, so if your source uses them, you will get very long lines. You can put
at the end of every line or double all line breaks to replace them with full paragraphs. Also note that Word uses so-called "smart quotes" (that look “like this”) which may be inadvertently included in your article. These quotes are generally frowned upon and do not display correctly in all browsers. One way of removing them is copying your text into another word processor like Notepad before pasting into Sex Positions Wiki.
- Understand that Sex Positions Wiki is not a chat site. Talk pages are provided for comments and collaboration relating to Sex Positions Wiki. The main Sex Positions Wiki site is not the appropriate place for having a chat with your friends or for talking about what you did at school today. Remember that all of your comments posted through the main site have to be viewed by a member of Recent Changes Patrol.
- Understand that Sex Positions Wiki is not a role playing site. Do not invent a fake persona for your Sex Positions Wiki account. Do not impersonate a famous person or other Sex Positions Wiki user with your Sex Positions Wiki account.
- Understand that Sex Positions Wiki is not a joke book. We encourage you to give helpful instructions with some humor in them, but the articles still should display useful instructions to reach a reasonable goal. Articles such as "How to Sex with Aliens on Venus" or "How to Sex a Pet Oogle" are obvious jokes and will be deleted. If you must joke, go to a site where joking is accepted (such as Uncyclopedia or Encyclopedia Dramatica) and joke around there.
- Understand that Sex Positions Wiki is not a place to display your personal opinion about everything under the sun. Feel free to post political or personal opinions on your user page, but keep other Sex Positions Wiki pages unbiased. Discussion pages on articles should be used simply to discuss the article and its content, and not your political opinion on the article's topic. For example, on a page entitled Become a Democrat, do not post on the discussion page a comment such as "Democrats make bad decisions- that's why I'm a Republican".
- Understand that Sex Positions Wiki is not a link farm. Sex Positions Wiki pages should contain useful instructions to reach a logical goal. They should not solely be made of links.
- Understand that Sex Positions Wiki is not an advertising platform for your products or services. Articles that are simply there to hawk a product or list its features are considered advertising and will be deleted.
- Understand that Sex Positions Wiki is not a place to post instructions on activities that are hate based or obviously damaging. Most of the people on Sex Positions Wiki are good citizens, and we would hate to be blamed when someone reads an article about How to Give your Grandmother a Concussion and subsequently sends their granny to the hospital.
- Understand that Sex Positions Wiki is not a place for instructions about what society should do. Focus on writing something individuals or small groups might be able to accomplish.
- Understand that Sex Positions Wiki is not a place for instructions that are only valuable to one person or to a select group of insiders. Sex Positions Wiki should provide instructions that people all over the world could realistically use.
- Understand that Sex Positions Wiki is not a place for sarcasm. Sex Positions Wiki aims to teach people how to do things they never knew how to do. To truly appreciate and understand sarcasm, one must have at least some knowledge of the topic talked about. Sarcastic articles will usually be nominated for deletion as "joke pages".
- Understand that Sex Positions Wiki is not a mirror or a file hosting site. Files that are uploaded or saved on the servers here must be used on active article pages, or Sex Positions Wiki itself. Please do not gratuitously upload files to Sex Positions Wiki - images and files uploaded must conform to Sex Positions Wiki deletion, image, and copyright policies.
- Understand that Sex Positions Wiki is not a blog. You cannot control or own a page on Sex Positions Wiki. Therefore, Sex Positions Wiki is the wrong place to operate a blog or daily journal. There are many blogging sites available for blogging.
- Understand that Sex Positions Wiki isn't a totally safe website. The internet is a whole lot more different than what it used to be. A person can pretend to be a eighteen year old girl, and really be a sixty-five year old man. Watch out for trolls.
- Understand that Sex Positions Wiki isn't MySpace. All of your contributions shouldn't go into just editing your user page. A user page is designed for other users to get to know you. It's best to avoid putting the following on your user page:
- your e-mail
- your phone number
- your address
- your real name
- your full name
- as well as any content that could help an internet user identify who you are and get control of your life.
Here’s the deal: we don’t want to remove your article. We really don’t. But we will, and with extreme prejudice, if you violate our guidelines.
Luckily, those guidelines are pretty simple, because we want everybody to play.
So just don’t do the following and we won’t delete your entries. OK?
- Nonsense and gibberish - make sure the stuff that you write has some connection to the sex position in question. Oh, and reality, as well.
- Test Pages - yes, dude, you can really create a page. That’s kind of the point. There is no sex position named “test” alright?
- Vandalism, by which we mean addition, removal or change of content in a deliberate attempt to screw up Sex Positions Wiki.
- Recreation of deleted material. If we deleted it, we have a reason. Don’t make us delete it again.
- Banned User. Entries created by banned users while they were banned. Unless somebody else made it actually useful.
- Disparaging language – we want this to be a reference, and we want it to be a place where you can write about and check out sex positions.
- Author Requests Deletion. - If requested in good faith, and provided the page's only substantial content was added by its author.
- Blatant Advertising – We’ll take care of the ads, thank you very much.
- Obvious Copyright Infringement - Text pages that meet all of the following:
- The content was obviously totally lifted from another source
- There is no non-infringing content on the page that is worth saving
- It was all written at the same time by the same guy
- There’s nothing mentioned about public domain, free license or fair use.
Any article can be proposed for deletion, and we will make a determination as to whether or not that article will be deleted.
Behavorial
- Civility - Being rude, insensitive or petty makes people upset and detracts from the overall experience – which is to find out about sex positions. Try to discourage others from being uncivil, and be careful to avoid offending people unintentionally.
- Editing – Improve pages whenever you can, and don’t worry about making them perfect.
- Don’t make legal threats or personal attacks – Use dispute resolution instead of legal threats. And comment on the content, rather than attacking someone who you don’t agree with.
- Ownership of articles – The whole point of this is that everybody contributes, so don’t get stressed out when somebody modifies your work.
- Sock Puppetry - Do not use multiple accounts to create the illusion of greater support for an issue, to mislead others, or to circumvent a block; nor ask your friends to create accounts to support you or anyone.
- Username - Choose a neutral username that you'll be happy with.
Content & Style
- Naming Conventions – Name the article what most of the world calls the sex position.
- Point of View – Try to be neutral when you are discussing facts surrounding the sex position.
- Verifiability - We cannot check the accuracy of claims, but we can check whether the claims have been published by a reputable publication. Articles should therefore cite sources whenever possible. Any unsourced material may be challenged and removed.
- Descriptions – Be very firm about high-quality references, particularly about details of sex positions. Unsourced or badly sourced contentious material — whether negative, positive, or just plain questionable - will be removed.
Policies
- Banning Policy - Extremely disruptive users may be banned. Please respect these bans, don't bait banned users and don't help them out.
- Protection Policy - Pages can be protected against vandals or during fierce content disputes
- Consensus - Most editing decisions are made by a continually evolving rough consensus among editors.
Legal & Copyright
- Copyrights - Material which infringes other copyrights must not be added. The legalities of copyright and "fair use" are quite complex
- Copyright violations – We will actively strive to find and remove any copyright violations.
- Libel - It is our policy to delete libelous revisions from the page history. If you believe you have been defamed, please contact us.
